History
In 1316 the patrician Johann von Steren from Wuerzburg donated an estate to take care of sick and insured people, which became the new hospital in town. Since the 16. hundreds it has been called “Buegerspital zum Heiligen Geist”.To keep the hospital running, many people donated further properties and vineyards, which was the foundation for the wine-growing estate. Today the Buergerspital Weingut belongs to the oldest and largest vineyards in Germany.
The history of the restaurant and wine tavern “Buergerspital-Weinstuben” reaches all the way back to 1873, when at the street corner of Semmelstrasse and Theaterstrasse a little wine bar named “Gothische Trinkstube” opened it's doors. Previously Buergersptial's different wines were sold at festivals like the Kiliani in Wuerzburg.
In 1935 the “Neue Trinkstube” was built and is still part of the restaurant today. After the demolition of the Buergerspital during the second world war, the “Trinkstube”was rebuilt and named “Alte Trinkstube”. The reconstruction was finished in 1978. Since then the “Weinstuben-Labyrint”with nine different rooms and roughly 500 seats has been existing. Since 1986 the restaurant has been managed by family Wiesenegg.
